At the Priory School we want children to be passionate about History.

Studying History is a vital part of their journey to becoming balanced and empathetic individuals, enabling them to understand how History gives an exceptional perspective to current events. Children explore the intriguing world of the past and make connections to their own lives and others in the world around them.

At the Priory School, History is about asking questions: from early child-initiated questions like” Did dinosaurs exist? How can we find out?” to “What does the recent discovery of a 4,300-year-old tomb tell us about life in Egypt?” we encourage historical enquiry, develop historical knowledge, challenge interpretations of history and provide valuable opportunities for children to voice and communicate their thoughts and ideas. We endeavour to bring history to life through our Spectacular Days where children consolidate their knowledge and understanding of a topic through workshops, dance, drama and art. Our walkabouts in Early Years and Key stage One, give pupils hands on experience, providing opportunities to handle real artefacts and explore relevant themes. We want the History they explore at Priory School to give them a sense of coherence and ability to see the legacy of past events in things today.  History helps develop a sense of chronology and the themes they study can been seen as chapters in the book of world history.

Children will learn about the big picture events as well as the personnel stories that bring History alive. We want our pupils to see themselves as Historians, not only for future possible jobs, but for themselves.

We achieve this by providing a rich, diverse curriculum, underpinned by our school’s core values (forgiveness, thankfulness, service, peace, truthfulness, respect, perseverance, generosity, courage, friendship and compassion) enabling every member of the school community to have a ‘Lifetime Love for Learning’.
