The Priory CofE Primary School

MATHS

Overview

Intent - Mastery approach

At the Priory C of E Primary School, mathematics is taught in a creative and interactive way, which engages and excites children to learn. We look for opportunities to help pupils to place their understanding within the context of the wider world. This could be through examples such as: calculating the total amount of money we need to purchase items, comparing prices across different supermarkets, working out what time to meet a connecting train, or weighing precise amounts of ingredients when following a recipe.

Our core aim at The Priory is to make our children fluent in solving calculations and to equip them with the tools to solve a variety of problems. Developing problem-solving and reasoning skills is a thread that runs through all of our Maths lessons, with pupils constantly challenged to explain why and to prove how they know they are correct or have found all possible outcomes.

Year 5 and 6 students at Kings' College Maths Project

Pupils are encouraged to use a wide range of resources and manipulatives to support their learning, such as hundred squares, number lines, numicon, cubes, place value cards, and counters, and are taught to use and create pictorial representations to support their understanding, such as part-whole and bar models.

“At the Priory, I feel that maths is one of the stronger subjects because I learn a lot about maths. The King’s College maths project gives me an opportunity to stretch myself and to learn more” Year 5 pupil

“I find maths fun when teachers make us do fun activities like; we played a mouse game when we were learning multiplication and divisions” Year 4 pupil

“I feel proud that I am part of the King’s College maths project. I really enjoy the part when we play a mini-game at the end of the session which helps me understand the learning better” Year 6 pupil

“I didn’t like maths before but now I do!” Year 3 pupil

“Maths is fun. We get to learn new things and work out different sums” Year 2 pupil

We look for opportunities to enrich the maths curriculum by making explicit links between different subject areas, such as monitoring skipping results in PE, cooking in DT, or collecting and recording results in Science, to further support pupils in putting their Maths learning into context. We provide opportunities for our pupils to take part in maths challenges in class but also engage in maths projects run by King’s College Wimbledon pupils for Year 5 and 6.

Maths at home:

Times Table Rockstars is excellent for developing fluency and mental maths for all ages! Children make themselves a rock star avatar and can compete with other children from their year in answering times tables questions.

National Oak Academy is a great online learning platform that has lessons for all year groups taught by teachers to support maths concepts at home

White rose maths also provides extra materials for free and we highly recommend parents to download the 1-minute maths app which is a good app to boost your child’s mental maths calculation.
